Scratch the Code: Scratch in the classroom

Coding is a skill that many people know nothing about. In my mind coding is a string of 1's and 0's that create a program (thank you high school for the skill I never used again!). So similar to computer programing, coding is a way to create their own computer game or interactive collage. They love it! In a world where 99% of children have used some form of technology to interact with online gaming, why not teach the nitty gritty, the how's and the why's?? Using programs like Scratch will give students a deeper understanding of the devices they use, and what it takes to create the games they play. In terms of the 5E learning model, video games get a gold star for ENGAGING children! They are the ones who explore, and it is now our job to explain and elaborate, to teach them HOW the game works the way it does. And while most of us are far from being computer programmers, Scratch allows us to learn, ourselves, and teach the basics of coding to our students in fun ways. There are so many lessons that can be used for any curricular outcome. Our aim is to engage our students by making learning fun and interactive, and this is a great way to incorporate technology into our classroom but also gain a deeper understanding of how technology really works!

  1. That's amazing to hear that Scratch is so well received. As someone who enjoys a bit of coding I can agree how engaging the Scratch form of coding is. I look forward and hope to hear more about the ways different students become engaged with Scratch.

  2. I love how you made the connection between the 5E's and scratch! I definitely think this will be a popular tool in the classroom. Such a great opportunity for you to learn as a teacher and with your students together!
